New York City's Empire State Building will be illuminated pink and white for three nights from sunset today in honor of the centennial of Japan's gift of cherry blossom trees to the United States.

During the lighting up, the top section of the 443.2-meter tower will be lit up in pink two thirds of the way up and then white for the rest of the way, according to the building's management company.u00a0

Ahead of the event, a lighting ceremony was held yesterday in the lobby of the building, illuminating a miniature tower in the same colors as the real building.

The Empire State Building shined its lights red and white, in the colors of Japan's national flag, in April last year in a sign of support for the country following the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami disaster, as well as in celebration of "Nadeshiko" Japan's victory in the Women's World Cup soccer final last July.u00a0
