A fan of Premier League side Newcastle United has reportedly been handed a year-long prison term for punching a police horse after a derby day match in April

Newcastle United supporter Barry Rogerson, who pleaded guilty to the charge of violent disorder, had attacked the animal after a football match between Newcastle and Sunderland on April 14.

According to the Daily Express, Rogerson was sentenced to 12 months in prison and was also handed a six-year footballing ban, with the judge reprimanding him that his actions, committed under the heavy influence of alcohol, could have caused grave injury to himself and the police officer sitting on the horse.

The report also said that from video footage, Rogerson is seen trying to fight the horse as police attempt to combat trouble between fans after the match.

Rogerson was one of seven men that pleaded guilty to violent disorder following the incident and all were jailed, the report added.
