In charge? CM Ashok Chavan

Dow Chemical is being asked to shift its research facility elsewhere from its present location near Pune. This is being done under pressure from locals, who have mobilised under Warkari sect leader Bandatatya Karhadkar.

It is known that Dow Chemical wanted to develop a research centre on the location, and no manufacturing activity would be conducted there. DOW's many projects included one that was to work out means of making brackish water potable.

Dow Chemical came to Maharashtra after it was assured of support by the state government. If it is pressurised to shift without allowing its officials to present their side, investors may get wary of bringing money into the state.

Already, those opposing development have caused a havoc across Maharashtra. Power plants, SEZs, ports, industrial estates and even laboratories are being opposed on one ground or the other. I believe former chief minister Vilasrao Deshmukh had a role to play in the treatment meted out to Dow Chemicals.

If Chief Minister Ashok Chavan does not take much-needed steps in the right direction, the youth in Maharashtra may have to join the scores of hapless farmers, who are being pushed into taking their own lives.
