We the populace of the world's largest democracy are a funny lot. And I mean that in the most humble way possible. For centuries, our ancestors have worshipped the female form as a Goddess. Laxmi, Parvati, Saraswati, Kali and Durga are just to name a few. In fact, even River Ganga is considered holy and pious, in the female form. Now, having said that let's just take a little reality check on the status of women in this glorious country of ours that we refer to as Bharat Mata.
In the last 72 hours, at least 11 cases of rape have been reported in Uttar Pradesh which happens to be the largest state of the country. Not to forget that it is being governed by a female chief minister. The CM merely stated that it was a normal sequence of events and there was no law and order issue in the state. Of these reported rapes, four were minors. Not to forget that 5 MLAs and representatives of the ruling BSP are also facing multiple charges of rape. So there's the first slap in the face.
Understandably, the TV news channels took her case and soon enough there were debates about how northern states have a bad attitude towards women. The same night a teenager was gangraped at a railway station in Mumbai. So there is the second slap in your face.
By the turn of the century, women todayu00a0 have replaced men as breadwinners of the family. They struggle through the daily commute in public transports, hopping over potholes and puddles, skipping and avoiding bottom pinchers, whistling wolves and roadside Romeos. No one seems to protest the fact that men ogle at women no matter how they are dressed ufffd wearing a salwar kameez, a sari or a western outfit. Eve teasing and molestation cases stem from the culprit and not from the victim ufffd isn't this the simplest bit of common sense?
So, when women have the dignified right to walk out of their homes and earn a living, then pray why is that a 'few good men' have a problem with the way they dress?u00a0 Why is it that women in Delhi are being forced to ape a SlutWalk in protest of their right to dress as they please? Who really gave a select section of 'civil society' the right to enforce a dress code on women? Why is it that women from across the country are forced to send Pink Panties to silence a wannabe neta?
If such 'moral men' continue this attitude, women will soon be flinging their stilettos at their semi-bald heads.
