A spate of unsavoury revelations in the media about the crimes committed by some very senior cops has added to Dilli's anxiety (read Chidambaram's perhaps!) that the cop force across India is on the cutting edge of corruption.
The Rathore episode has clearly rattled the bastions of the Home Ministry and the entire neta clan in general. The ensuing clamour now threatens not just Rathore, who in all likelihood will get his comeuppance, but also the likes of the formidable K P S Gill.
Meanwhile, Mumbai led by example with five city cops suspended for partying with gangsters at a Chembur club. But sadly for the cavorting cops, the media spotlight has never really shifted from the men in khaki after 26/11, especially when their outing happened close on the heels of a bitter feud among the top brass of the Mumbai police. There may be more skeletons in the cupboard. Be very scared.
Clean-up time
Mumbaikars, you'd better not sweep this under the carpet or raise a holy stink! It's time to come clean. The recently launched nationwide campaign on urban sanitation will place 441 Class-I cities under the scanner of sanitary inspectors. They will be judged on the basis of their sanitation standards.
u00a0We Dilliwalas have a head start over the rest of the nation, since we are hosting the Commonwealth Games next year. It wouldn't do to assail the sensitive nervous systems of the expected foreign guests with the sights and smells we routinely muck around with! The municipal authorities have launched an independent campaign, peppering the capital with messages to spread sanitation awareness.u00a0
u00a0But the urban development ministry's national plan is more audacious. Minister Jaipal Reddy is aiming for nothing less than 100 per cent cleanliness across urban India. Let's hope so.
