Cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar's new house under construction near the Otters Club and Joggers Park at Perry Cross Road, in Bandra (W) is located in a leafy lane. It has typical old Bandra bungalows that give the suburb its quaint flavour and make it such a mix of new age steel and concrete towers with older, squatter, more solid structures. Not surprisingly, the half-finished, yet-unnamed structure has already become a landmark of sorts.
The man at the little corner store, the fruit seller on the kerb and the rickshaw wallah looking for passengers all point proudly and say, "Dekho, dekho Sachin Tendulkar ka ghar." The under construction house seems like a three or four-storey construction, pretty big for one family. Well, why does such a short man (Sachin) need such a tall house? Like they say in those paan masala ads: Oonche logon ki oonchi pasand. Whatever that means.

The Hockey World Cup final in New Delhi got a bit overshadowed, with all the Indian Premier League (IPL) hype and hoopla. The winners -- Australia -- though, reminded me of the time I met an Australian bodybuilder in Mumbai who was here for a bodybuilding competition. Australia's sterling sporting achievements he said, were a result of children being encouraged to take up sports. He also said that in Australia the system is such that if you are good, you have a go. Which means if you are a talented player (not somebody's brother, sister, uncle, son or daughter), you get a chance to play -- simple.
While on simplicity, Eustace Fernandes, the creator of the Amul girl,u00a0 passed away in the city recently. The Amul girl was Eustace's most famous creation but the advertising professional also made a number of other food mascots like the Amul Cheese Boy, the Arlem Beer man and the Modern Bread lion. His philosophy was to keep drawings clean and uncomplicated and copy short and effective. "I like to hit the nail on the head in the shortest possible time," Eustace had said, laughing at today's promotions that pay crores to Bollywood brand ambassadors.
On Bollywood brand ambassadors, Ranbir Kapoor was more nearly 1.5 hours late for a promotion for the John Players apparel brand at the ITC hotel in Parel on a hot and humid Thursday morning. That's the slowest Rocket (Singh) one has seen.u00a0u00a0u00a0
