The age-old puzzle that has stumped scientists and philosophers for generations has finally been cracked.
British researchers have at long last concluded that the chicken came before the egg since formation of the egg is possible only because of a protein found in the chicken's ovaries.
A team of scientists from Warwick and Sheffield universities examined the formation of a chicken's eggs in microscopic detail and discovered that the protein, called ovocledidin-17, acts as a catalyst to speed up the development of the shell.
The researchers have said the discovery could have other uses.
"Understanding how chickens make shells is fascinating in itself but can also give clues towards designing new materials," they said. Now for the next conundrum: Why did the chicken cross the road?
