Trishna and Krishna, the Bangladeshi twins who were conjoined at their heads at birth and surgically separated in a Melbourne hospital five weeks ago, were yesterday discharged from hospital to celebrate their third birthday.

Melbourne Royal Children's Hospital staff bid their two star patients an emotional farewell as they left hospital pushed in separate strollers by guardian Moira Kelly and a carer.

"We are absolutely delighted with their progress," neurosurgeon Wirginia Maixner said in a hospital statement released by a news agency.

Homeward Bound: Krishna (left stroller) and Trishna, with Australian guardian Moira Kelly, carer Maria Mardi and Sister Fran, all from the Children First Foundation, before they were discharged.

"I look forward to seeing them live a long and happy life that's my wish for them."

The statement said the girls had made "amazing progress" since the 30-hour surgery to separate their skulls, with Trishna having been scooting around hospital corridors in her walker and Krishna also finding her feet using a walker. The girls will continue to receive care as outpatients at the hospital.

In the statement, Kelly said she thought the day of the girls' discharge from hospital would never come.
"I'm so grateful to all the staff at the hospital," she said.

"They have given these two little girls a new life. I can't wait to take them home."
