The haunting image of a little girl, Yanela, crying helplessly as she and her Honduran mother Sandra Sanchez are taken into custody by the US border officials won the prestigious World Press Photo Award on Thursday.
Judges said veteran Getty photographer John Moore's photo taken after the two illegally crossed the US-Mexico border last year showed "a different kind of violence that is psychological".
The picture, published worldwide, caused a public outcry about US's controversial policy to separate thousands of migrants and their children. "I could see the fear on their faces, in their eyes," Moore told the US-based NPR broadcaster." I think immigration issues resonate not just in the US, but around the world," he said at the awards.
