Former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair has been accused of being evangelical and messianic, and now, greedy - he wants 150 pounds for signed edition of his memoirs said to look like a Bible.

Blair is expecting to gain maximum returns from the American markets for his signed, numbered limited edition of "A Journey".

Pre-orders of the hardback edition are selling at half its 25 pounds recommended price on Amazon.

Political insiders are astonished that Blair could ask for such a high price in the midst of a recession.

"I'm flummoxed. There is always some political anorak who would be prepared to but I certainly won't be buying it," The Daily Mail quoted Blair's former aide, Charlie Whelan, as saying.

"Tony Blair is obviously far better at managing his own finances than he was at handling the country's," said another Liberal Democrat.

However, Random House, the publisher, has defended the price, saying that they often produce high-price editions such as these for high profile titles.
