A 12-year-old boy sent his school into a tizzy when he turned up as a girl after his summer holidays.

The student, whose identity has not been disclosed, arrived for his first term at secondary school in a dress and with long hair in ribboned pigtails. His parents changed his name to a female one over the holidays.

He had hoped the transformation would go unnoticed, as he was starting secondary education and children stepping up from other primary schools wouldn't recognise him.

But his former classmates did spot the difference. He had to endure spiteful jibes and was even asked, "Are you gay?"

Assembly order

As a result, the 1,000-pupil school called an emergency assembly, ordering children to treat him as a girl and use his new name.

They threatened tough disciplinary action against offenders.

Parents were angry at the announcement that left their kids tearful and confused.

They said they should have been informed in advance so they could prepare their kids. They added that the school's failure to do so had left the boy to suffer taunts and bullying.

One mother said, "Maybe we could have explained sexual politics and encouraged our kids to be more sensitive if we'd had a chance to be involved.

The girl, as she now is, will go through hell because of how this has been handled."

The boy is now absent from school, as his family has received threats and they are all under police protection.

Special room

The head at his primary school insisted he was treated as a boy despite his "girlie" behaviour. He wore a bikini instead of trunks at swimming lessons, dried himself on Barbie towelsu00a0 and wore pink ribbons.

But the secondary school has given him a separate toilet and changing room.

His mother told The Sun, "We're committed to ensuring the very best for our child. We're working with agencies to ensure our child's welfare."

The boy is now preparing for hormone treatment and sex change surgery. Though he won't be allowed hormone treatment in the UK until passing puberty, he could become the world's youngest sex-swap case.
