A strong earthquake shook buildings in Tokyo on Saturday setting off car alarms as it rattled the Japanese capital. Residential buildings swayed for around a minute as the quake built in intensity at around 8.30pm (1130 GMT)

The US Geological Survey reported a 7.8-magnitude earthquake approximately 874 kilometres from Tokyo in the
Pacific Ocean.

Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said the temblor struck at 4.53 p.m. at a depth of 660 km near Bonin Islands, an archipelago of over 30 sub-tropical and tropical islands, around 1,000 km south of Tokyo.
