The menu for a $1,000 (Rs 50,000)-a-head dinner proved spicier than advertised when Spain's King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia guests of honour during a visit to Florida were subjected to abuses from Mario Batali, a US celebrity chef.

Angry young man: Mario Batali |
Frustrated that the audience would not quieten down when it was his turn to take the microphone, Batali ranted, "All you weasel f'''wads... can I have 10 seconds of your time?" he said.
Introducing Jose Andres, another chef, Batali continued, "The most motherf'''ing stars of any Spanish restaurant in the US."
Queen Sofia "blanched" at Batali's vocabulary and other celebrity guests, including singer Julio Iglesias and theu00a0 Florida governor were equally shocked.
Singer Gloria Estefan started giggling.
Batali is well known in Spain after starring in a TV series with Gwyneth Paltrow about Spanish cooking.
Andru00e9s said afterwards, "This is what food and wine from Spain will do to you."
King Juan has himself giv-en diplomatic offence. Bored with a rant by Hugo Chavez at a summit in 2007, he told the Venezuelan President, "Why don't you shut up?" and stormed off.
