Cigarette firm told to pay Rs 1,397 Cr to smoker

A jury in the US state of Florida on Thursday ordered cigarette maker Philip Morris USA to pay $300 million (Rs 1,397 crore) in damages to a 61-year-old ex-smoker named Cindy Naugle who is wheelchair-bound by emphysema.


A jury in the US state of Florida on Thursday ordered cigarette maker Philip Morris USA to pay $300 million (Rs 1,397 crore) in damages to a 61-year-old ex-smoker named Cindy Naugle who is wheelchair-bound by emphysema.

The jury assessed $56.6 million (Rs 265 crore) in past and future medical expenses against the company as well as $244 million (Rs 1,137 crore) in punitive damages.
