Just before dawn on Monday, Freya, Chancellor George Osbourne's cat, took on Larry, the Prime Minister's pet, in a very public catfight.
The police were forced to step in to break up the cat fight. The two felines were separated after engaging in a full-scale cat fight outside No 10, and retreated spitting to their respective political fiefdoms.
Freya the silver cat appeared to have the best of the confrontation, when Larry, who has white markings, was ordered back inside No 10 to consider his behaviour, leaving the street free for his rival to stalk.
It is not known what caused fur to fly between the feline residents of Nos 10 and 11 Downing Street. Relations between their human occupants are far more amicable than when Tony Blair and Gordon Brown were prime minister and chancellor respectively.
The British Prime Minister's official spokesman said, "I am not going to get into commenting on the adventures of our feline friends in Downing Street." Asked about how well the felines get on, the spokesman added: "They co-exist."u00a0
