A 15-year-old girl from Sydney was forced to cancel her 'small house birthday party' she organised on Facebook after almost 180,000 people accepted the invitation.

Jess, from Chatswood, on the North Shore, and a Year 10 student, originally intended to invite her grade only, but told her guests via the social networking site they could bring friends, reports the Courier Mail.

Within 24 hours, the party had more than 20,000 people listed as 'attending', prompting the schoolgirl to send an unhappy message cancelling 16th birthday bash: "it's f'''in off."

However, a replica invitation appeared an hour later.

The hoax invitation has continued to attract interest, with 50,000 guests listed as attending at lunchtime.

Police are now looking for the creator of the fake invitation.

Chatswood Inspector Peter Yeomans said parties advertised on Facebook were a bad idea.

"It has a huge number of hits online and has the potential to turn very serious," he said.
