International Labour Day or May Day is observed annually on May 1 to celebrate the achievements of workers. It has its origins in the labour union movement, specifically the eight-hour day movement, which advocated eight hours for work, eight hours for recreation, and eight hours for rest.
For many countries, Labour Day is synonymous with, or linked with, International Workers' Day.
In India, the day is celebrated as Maharashtra Day or Maharashtra Diwas since it marks the formation of the state of Maharashtra from the division of the Bombay State on 1 May 1960. The day is commonly associated with parades and political speeches and ceremonies, in addition to various other public and private events celebrating the history and traditions of Maharashtra.
