Interpol has issued a worldwide alert for a Singaporean wanted after the theft of more than five million US dollars' worth of watches, a rare crime of such magnitude in one of Asia's safest cities.

The global police body says Singapore has issued an arrest warrant for Jerry Ee, 35, who is wanted for theft.

Interpol gave no details of the crime but a source said Ee is sought in connection with the theft at a luxury Cortina Watch shop, which the company said it discovered on December 26.

A picture of a smiling Ee posted on the Interpol website shows him flashing a peace sign. He is dressed in a shirt and tie, and appears to be surrounded by watch display cases.

Local newspapers reported that Ee was an employee of the shop but has been missing since the theft, one of the largest in recent memory in the city-state which prides itself on tight security and a low crime rate.

Interpol red notices allow a local warrant to be circulated worldwide alongside a request that the suspect be arrested with a view to extradition. Ee speaks English, Mandarin and Thai, Interpol said.
