A hospital midwife has been suspended over claims she put a newborn baby in a cupboard because it was crying. She is said to have yelled at the child for making a racket then grabbed the cot, put it in the cupboard and walked away. When the midwife, who has years of experience, told horrified colleagues what she had done they made her take the baby out, a hospital source said.
The source added, "Who could do that to any child, let alone a newborn baby? She said the baby was crying too much and others had complained." An inquiry has begun at the ufffd200million Queen's Hospital in Romford, Essex, whose maternity unit has been blighted by tragedy. In March inspectors said it fell "far short" of essential standards. Two months before, Sareena Ali (27), and her baby daughter died after the new mum was left unchecked by staff following an emergency caesarean.
