He's not a superhero just yet, but US President-elect Barack Obama does get to fist-bump one in a new Spider-Man comic book.
On January 14, Marvel Comics is releasing a special issue of Amazing Spider-Man #583 with Obama on the cover. Inside are five pages of how Spider-Man stops the Chameleon from spoiling Obama's swearing-in.
"It was a natural after we learned the new president is a Spider-Man fan," said Marvel editor-in-chief Joe Quesada. "We thought, 'Fantastic! We have a comic-book geek in the White House'." Obama, a comic book collector, had revealed during his campaign that Spider-Man and Batman were his top superheroes.
The issue, selling for $3.99 (Rs 200), is expected to be an instant sellout. "This issue will go for premium prices," said a comic bookstore owner. "I expect this will be on the collectors' market for $20
(Rs 1,000) by the first day."
Said Quesada, "We do our best to be non-partisan... This is not so much a pro-Obama statement, but a tip of the hat to having a Spider-Man fan in the White House."
Would John McCain have gotten an issue had he won? "If he was a Spidey fan, he woul-d," said Quesada.
