The Tibetan government-in-exile, based in Dharamsala, Himachal Pradesh, welcomed the scheduled meeting between their spiritual leader the Dalai Lama and US President Barack Obam as an occasion to highlight the "tense" situation in Tibet.

Obama was to meet the Dalai Lama on Saturday in the Map Room, not the Oval Office, generally reserved for visiting heads of state. The Chinese government however called on the US to cancel the meeting warning that it would "damage" relations between the countries.
