Islamabad: The death toll from a deadly train accident in Pakistan's restive Balochistan province on Wednesday rose to 19 after three of the injured passengers died, an official said on Wednesday.
The engine and nine coaches of Rawalpindi-bound Jaffar Express derailed from track yesterday at Ab-i-gum area in Bolan district of the province. The train was coming from provincial capital Quetta.
Provincial Home Secretary Akbar Hussian Durrani said that more than 300 people were injured in the accident. "The death toll has risen to 19," he said. "About one dozen are still in critical conditions," he said.
Train accidents are common in Pakistan. The railways have seen decades of decline due to graft, mismanagement and lack of investment. Trains are often targeted by Baloch militants fighting for greater control over the mineral resources of the province.
