The Pakistani Taliban claimed responsibility for the attempted car bomb attack in New York's Times Square in a video posted on YouTube yesterday. However, New York City's top policeman says there is "no evidence" to support a claim that the terror group was involved.

Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said a white man in his 40s had been identified on video footage of the area and was seen removing a dark shirt to reveal a red shirt about half a block from the vehicle.
"Although a Taliban bomb-maker has claimed on the Internet that the car bomb was placed in Times Square to avenge the deaths of mujahadeen fighters, we have no evidence to support this claim," he said.
Propane tanks, fireworks, petrol and a clock device were all removed from the vehicleu00a0 and police say the "amateurish" bomb could have created a "significant fireball" if it had detonated.
They said it was not possible to verify the authenticity of Taliban's claim that the attempted bombing was in revenge of the recent killing of two top al Qaeda leaders in Iraq and US drone strikes in Pakistan. Rep Peter King of Long Island said the plot may be related to threats against the creators of South Park, which recently aired an episode mocking the Prophet Mohammed.
