Bangkok: Chanting of Buddhist mantras, verses from the Gita, Bible and Quran marked a multi-faith homage for Thailand's King Bhumibol Adulyadej who passed away last week. The sombre function was organised by the Embassy of India and India Thai Chamber of Commerce here earlier this week.

More than 500 Indian expatriates and ethnic Indians attended the homage function. The evening homage function started with Buddhist chants by 10 monks from wat Suanplu, who began their chantings with "Buddam sharanam gachami".

In a brief address, India's ambassador to Thailand, Bhagwant Singh Bishnoi noted that the passing away of the king on October 13 was a great loss. "There is no one more loved and respected as King Bhumibol. For me, the king was the epitome of the best a monarch can be," the envoy said.

The King was respected and admired all over the world and the people of India grieve with the people of Thailand, Bishnoi added.

Later Hindu prayers, led by Pandit Vidyadhar, from the Bhagwat Gita were read out, followed by verses from the Quran by the Tamil Muslim Association in Thailand.

This was followed by scriptures from the Bible, Namokar Mantra of Jains and Shabad Kirtan sung by Sikh devotees.
