Riyadh: Two Indians and a Saudi policeman were injured when unidentified gunmen opened fire at a security patrol in Saudi Arabia's troubled Shia-dominated Qatif region in the east, the Interior Ministry said on Wednesday.

A traffic patrol at Alkhwaildieh district in Qatif came under 'heavy fire from a farming area', a spokesman of the Ministry said. The firing that occurred last evening wounded two Indian passers-by and a policeman.

"One Indian is from Sitapur and the other is from Lucknow," Hifzur Rahman, Second Secretary at the Indian Embassy here told PTI.

"They have suffered injuries in hand and leg. Our representative have also met them and they are in a stable condition. Bullets will be removed from their bodies today," he added.

During the confrontation, a car was also hit without injuring its driver, state-run Saudi Press Agency quoted the Interior Ministry official as saying. Security authorities immediately rushed to the spot and started search for the gunmen.

The ministry has asked the public to report any relevant information to the authorities besides warning them against providing any kind of help to people on a list of 23 wanted suspects issued in 2011 after Shia unrest.
