The pay is poor, the hours long, and the successful applicant can expect to spend a quarter of the year on the road.

Such is the role of trainee butler at Buckingham Palace, a job currently up for grabs for someone "polite" and "discrete".



The Queen has advertised the position, also known as footman, on her royal household website, asking that applicants have a background in food and beverage service.

The job description includes setting, clearing and serving at both official and private meal times at the palace and other residences.

In addition, the trainee will see to the delivery of newspapers and messages and also assist with the organisation of luggage belonging to both royal family members and guests.

The 45-hour per week role, which pays a ufffd15,000 (Rs 11 lakh) a year, also offers accommodation and applicants are told they "must be willing to spend approximately three months of the year away from London at other royal residences".

Desirable personal attributes for applicants include, "A friendly, polite and approachable disposition with the ability to be discrete and maintain confidentiality".
