IN PICS: PM Narendra Modi, US President Joe Biden meet for first bilateral meeting

Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Washington on September 22 on a three-day trip at the invitation of United States President Joe Biden. This is PM Modi's first visit abroad beyond the neighbourhood since the Covid-19 pandemic outbreak. This is the first meeting between the two leaders since Biden assumed office in January as President. During the meeting, the two leaders reviewed the comprehensive global strategic partnership between the two countries. They also exchanged views on regional and global issues of mutual interest.

Biden while meeting Modi said, 'Relationship between India and US, largest democracies in the world, is destined to be stronger, closer and tighter.'

Modi said US President Joe Biden is taking initiatives to implement his vision for India-US relations. He also thanked Biden for the warm welcome accorded to him and his delegation at the White House.

The meeting between Modi and Biden took place in the backdrop of the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan.

PM Narendra Modi along with US Vice President Kamala Harris as they held discussions on different issues concerning Indo-US ties.

PM Modi has described US Vice President Kamala Harris as a 'source of inspiration' for many people around the world and expressed confidence that bilateral relations will touch new heights under President Joe Biden and her leadership.

On September 24, Modi also held a bilateral meeting with Japanese PM Yoshihide Suga. India and Japan in recent times have shared a close relationship and both countries are part of the Quad summit.

Indian PM and his Japanese counterpart Suga have reaffirmed the importance of maritime security towards the realisation of a 'free and open' Indo-Pacific.

 

Harris is the first-ever person of Indian origin to be elected as the vice-president of the United States. During his meeting with Harris, PM Modi reiterated the importance of strategic and cultural ties between the two countries.

On September 25, PM Modi will deliver a video address at the event 'Global Citizen Live'. It is a global advocacy organisation that is working to end extreme poverty. The event will be broadcast in 120 countries and over multiple social media channels.
