Australia, requiring 241 for victory, had appeared to be grinding their way to their target on the back of opening batsman David Warner's maiden Test century (123 not out) until Bracewell (6-40 off 16.4 overs) helped send them tumbling from 159-2 to 233 all out to square the two-Test series 1-1.

Warner and last man Nathan Lyon shared a 34-run partnership to almost drag Australia out of the mire, but Bracewell dismissed Lyon for nine in the 64th over to spark huge celebrations on the field.

The win was New Zealand's first in Australia since 1985, and was just their third from 28 attempts across the Tasman, stuff.co.nz reports.

Their last victory over Australia at any venue was back in 1993, in Auckland.

Warner, who was voted the man-of-the match, said that he was disappointed at getting close to the target and not finishing it off.

"Credit to New Zealand. There was swing there and variable bounce, fantastic effort from him and other bowlers. Nathan would be disappointed, but at the end of the day, it's cricket, and we'll learn from it," he said.
