Superman golfers are becoming as great a threat to courses as technology, warned World No 1 Tiger Woods, whose dedication to fitness first forced rivals to go big or go home.
Speaking ahead today's start of the 109th US Open at Bethpage Black, Woods said the evolution of larger and more powerful golfers has contributed to the need to stretch out some classic courses to keep up with the times.
"We're running out of room on a lot of golf courses," Woods said. "They've tried to put limitations on the speed of club faces, how fast the golf ball can move, but if you look at it guys are getting bigger and stronger. People forget that." Defending champ Woods seeks a 15th major title and record-tying fourth US Open triumph on a that will play 212 yards longer this year with the longest par-4 hole in US Open history, the 525-yard seventh that stretches eight yards more than the par-5 fourth.
