The match between Bombay Scottish 'A' (Powai) and Navi Children School (Colaba) might have ended in a goalless draw but one player caught everyone's attention.
Bombay Scottish (left) and Navy Children players battle it out during
yesterday's U-16 Division II match at Azad Maidan. PIC/Pradeep Dhivar Scottish goalkeeper Ephraim Varghese put in a special performance yesterday. He made some brilliant saves against a visibly stronger opposition during an MSSA U-16 Div II inter-school league match at Azad Maidan.
Ironically, Ephraim does not enjoy goalkeeping. Even more amusingly, he told MiD DAY that he took to football only after failing to make the playing XI of his school's cricket team.
"I was interested in playing cricket and represented my school for three years in the Harris Shield. But I was a substitute and hardly got any opportunity to play.
"This being my last year in school, I wanted to make the most of it and not miss out, so I decided to try for the football team," Ephraim said after the final whistle.
In fact, Ephraim readily compromised on the position too just to get into the football team. "I always wanted to be a defender but kept mum after I got picked as goalkeeper as I wanted to be part of the team anyhow," he said.u00a0
Scottish coach Ranjit Bhan heaped praise on Ephraim, "I selected him as a goalkeeper after seeing him 'keeping during an outdoor session of the physical education class. Today, I'm glad I made that decision," said Bhan.
