A placard in the Sachin Tendulkar Stand read: I love golgappas (paani- puri in Delhi lingo). And the Delhi Daredevils devoured the Mumbai Indians like a plate of just that at the Wankhede Stadium yesterday to finally break the jinx and register their first win in the Mumbai Indians' den.
Delhi first skittled out the hosts for just 92 (Mumbai's lowest total in the ongoing IPL-V) and then thumped Harbhajan Singh's men by seven wickets with 31 balls to spare. Skipper Virender Sehwag began in his trademark style with a blazing flat six over backward point in the very first over of the chase.
Going by the way they started, it seemed MI had given up all hopes of defending the total. RP Singh gave away three wides in his first over and four leg-byes came off Munaf Patel's second over.
Missed chances
Known to be an excellent fielding side, Mumbai Indians missed a few direct hits that would have given them some momentum. Richard Levi dropped a sitter on the boundary to hand dangerous Sehwag, batting on 16, a life. Big-hitter Sehwag thereafter took calculative risks and mastered Delhi's chase with a patient 32 off 36 (two fours and a six). Pragyan Ojha finally got the Delhi skipper in the 12th over, but it was too late.
Earlier, put into bat, Rohit Sharma steadied Mumbai's innings with his 29 off 27 after the hosts got off to a horrendous start losing both openers - Richard Levi (1) and Davy Jacobs (0) were back in the dugout with the scoreboard reading 5-2, courtesy left-arm spinner Shahbaz Nadeem.u00a0Sharma looked edgy during his stay and departed after top-edging one from Ross Taylor at deep backward square off his Mumbai Ranji Trophy teammate Ajit Agarkar.
While Delhi's bowlers continued making inroads, Mumbai Indians u00a0skipper Harbhajan gave the home crowd something to cheer with his entertaining knock of 33 studded with five fours and a six.u00a0For Delhi Daredevils, Umesh Yadav, Morne Morkel and Agarkar picked up two wickets each while Irfan Pathan claimed one.
Malinga injured
Meanwhile, there was more bad news for Mumbai as paceman Lasith Malinga is set to miss the next game due to a back sprain. Malinga has been MI's most dangerous weapon over the last few seasons.
Brief scores
Mumbai Indians 92 all out in 19.2 overs (Harbhajan Singh 33, Rohit Sharma 29; Umesh Yadav 2-11, Shahbaz Nadeem 2-16, Ajit Agarkar 2-27). Delhi Daredevils 93-3 (Virender Sehwag 32; RP Singh 2-24). Delhi won by seven wickets
