As the West Indies team alighted from the bus, David Williams was the only recognisable face. And, he's the coach of the Caribbean team.

The fans, scribes and some of the ICC officials did not know the names of the cricketers. Nobody knows what Floyd Reifer does. Is he a batsman or a bowler; right-hander or left-hander. He made his international debut in 1997 versus Sri Lanka at Port of Spain.u00a0 He missed 254 ODIs and now, he's captain of the side.

Asked whether he received a call from the regular West Indies players, Chris Gayle, Shivnarine Chanderpaul or Ramnaresh Sarwan. Reifer answered in the negative but revealed that his inexperienced team had a 10-day preparatory camp in Barbados where they were visited by a couple of Caribbean legends. "Sir Gary Sobers and Wes Hall gave us a pep talk. While we were leaving Barbados, we met Brian Lara at the airport and he wished us well," said Reifer.

Unenviable task
The rookie team's task is all the more difficult being in a tough group which includes defending champions Australia besides India and Pakistan. Reifer knows the odds are heavily loaded against them, but he believes an upset is not out of reach. "Ours is a new team. Our main aim is to learn. In 2004, West Indies were the underdogs and Lara's team won the championship.

"We will concentrate and fight for 100 overs. We will let the bat and ball talk. We have nothing to lose and will go all out from the first ball," said Reifer. West Indies start their campaign against ICC World Twenty20 champions Pakistan today. Reifer said the injury to Younis Khan is a big blow for his opponent. "It's good news for us that Younis is not playing against us. He's their captain and it is a big setback for them."

The International Cricket Council officials tried their best to settle the issue between the West Indies board and their senior pros so as to get the likes of Gayle, Chanderpaul and Sarwan to take part in the Champions Trophy.
However, now the same 15, who were originally selected, will play. Never mind the identification crisis!
