Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas refused to criticize Spain teammates Xavi and Sergio Ramos for pulling out of the friendly against Italy in order to return to their respective clubs.
The duo have headed back to Barcelona and Real rather than face the 2006 world champions in Bari as their clubs seek to manage their fitness for what is sure to be a long campaign ahead.
Casillas understands that approach, but is eager to feature in the match in Italy himself despite it coming so early in the season.
"It's a very nice game, which pits the last two world champion teams.
"It is true that in August, a lot of players are still in pre-season but it is a game that we all want to play," he told Marca.
"Any player who has been included in this selection is pleased to belong to a team of European and world champions. They are happy to be here," he added.
