Sources in the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) said that both the boards have been in discussion to hold this Test match for over a month now and have almost zeroed-in on organising it at Eden Gardens. It is learnt that the BCCI was not keen on hosting the historic contest at Afghanistan's adopted home ground, the Shaheed Vijay Singh Pathik Sports Complex in Greater Noida, as the venue has been banned temporarily by the BCCI after a private league was hosted there earlier this year which came under the scanner of anti-corruption unit.

BCCI's acting secretary Amitabh Choudhary said: "The Afghans were scheduled to play their first Test in 2019 versus Australia, but considering the historic relationship between India and Afghanistan, we decided to host their first Test." Afghanistan and Ireland were given Test status this year in June.
