The BCCI are likely to name Gautam Gambhir as vice-captain for all three formats at the end of the selection meeting on Friday at Chennai. BCCI are certain that Gambhir is the best candidate to be groomed as Mahendra Singh Dhoni's deputy over the next few years.

Virender Sehwag, who was vice-captain of the team during the tour of SA and at the World Cup, has reportedly not shown interest in the leadership role on a number of occasions. With Sehwag's injury likely to rule him out of the tour of West Indies, Gambhir is likely to assume responsibility as vice-captain during the three-Test series in the Caribbean.
It is also learnt that a third string team will travel to West Indies for the five-match ODI series and one-off T20 international. If Gambhir skips the ODIs in WI, the likelihood of Harbhajan Singh, who has declared his availability for the entire tour in June, captaining India for the first time could become a reality.
