Sydney: Australia all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has been handed a team fine for comments relating to teammate Matthew Wade.

Maxwell landed himself in hot water on Thursday when he expressed disappointment about batting below the wicketkeeper for Victoria in the Sheffield Shield.

"I think probably batting below the wicketkeeper is also a bit painful," Maxwell said. "The wicketkeeper should be batting at seven unless you're trying to squeeze an extra bowler into your line-up."

Australia captain Steve Smith said on Saturday that was enough to earn Maxwell an undisclosed fine.

"Everyone was disappointed in his comments," Smith said in a press conference on the eve of their opening one-day international with New Zealand here today. "I've expressed that to him myself and spoken to the team. One of our values is respect and having respect for your teammates, opposition, fans and media.

"I thought what he said was very disrespectful to a teammate and his Victorian captain.

"The leadership group got together and decided to fine Glenn. We thought that was a sufficient punishment."

Smith indicated the situation had been an unwelcome distraction from preparations for today's opening match, but said it was time to move forward.
