The last time Amla visited the VCA Stadium, he scored a career-best unbeaten knock of 253. "Obviously, (it feels special to return) but that was a Test match, and this is an ODI. I have enjoyed batting in Indian conditions, just like any other batsman would. These are batting beauties, and my job as an opener is to give the team good starts," Amla told reporters yesterday ahead of Saturday's World Cup game against India.
MiD DAY asked Amla to elaborate on the frustration he underwent when sidelined from the ODI team for almost five years. "I was playing on Tests in the beginning ufffd was sidelined because Herschelle (Gibbs) and Graeme (Smith) had a great opening pair going on. I didn't find a place in the team. Since coming to the ODI team, I have tried to keep things simple. Everyone has to battle some sort of popular perception, I did too. People thought I was a Test specialist. I haven't done anything different to succeed, my strength is to adapt quickly," said the world's no 1 ODI batsman.
