Let's take a look at the Indian Premier League franchise Mumbai Indians' list of veteran picks over the years
IPL-1 (2008)
Sanath Jayasuriya was 40 when MI bought him for USD 975,000. He scored a fine 114 not out off just 48 balls vs Chennai. Shaun Pollock was 36 when MI got him for USD 550,000. He aggregated 147 runs & 11 wkts from 13 matches.
IPL-4 (2011)
Andrew Symonds was 35 when MI bought him for USD 850,000. He was a complete flop for MI failing to score a single half century and struggled to keep his place in the playing XI.
IPL-5 (2012)
Herschelle Gibbs was 38 when MI picked him for USD 50,000. The hard-hitter and super fielder however didn't make too much of an impact scoring an aggregate of 81 runs from the three matches he played.
IPL-6 (2013)
Ricky Ponting was 38 when he was not bought for USD 400,000 and handed captaincy too. The Australian played in just 6 matches but did what no other MI skipper could in the IPL - help them win the title.
IPL-7 (2014)
MI have bought India pace spearhead Zaheer Khan (35) for 2.6cr and veteran Australian Michael Hussey (38) for a whopping Rs 5cr. Only time will tell how well the two seasoned campaigners fare for the defending champions.
