Table-toppers Chennai Super Kings recovered from ther horrible loss to Mumbai Indians by winning a one-sided game against Sunrisers Hyderabad by 77 runs at the u00a0Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Uppal on Wednesday.
Chasing 224 to win, the Hyderabad outfit failed to put up any sort of resistance as they crumbled for in their alloted 20 overs.
The hosts didn't put up any sort of fight as the mammoth target completely overwhelmed them. A steady fall of wickets meant the Sunrisers didn't have a partnership of note and it led to their downfall. The Hyderabad outfit has been hampered by their weak batting and that aspect of their game hurt them in Chennai as well. But what was more disturbing was the abject surrender of their bowlers.u00a0
Sunrisers' opener Parthiv Patel was the only batsman to offer any resistance as he scored a quick-fire 44 off just 30 balls. His innings included 6 boundaries and one six. But once he departed the game was all but over for the visitors.
At the halfway mark Sunrisers were tottering at 75 for 5 and the result of the game was a foregone conclusion.u00a0
Earlier, Suresh Raina missed his second century of this edition by only one run but sent the Sunrisers bowlers on a leatherhunt as Chennai Super Kings piled up a massive 223 for three.u00a0
With 'Mr Cricket' Mike Hussey in an equally punishing mood, the duo added a whopping 133 runs in 12 overs to help the 'Yellow Brigade' reach an imposing target. Needing five runs of the final delivery of the innings to complete his century, Raina hit his trademark uppish cover-drive to reach 99 off 52 balls with 11 fours and three sixes.
The Chennai blitz must have made Sunrisers' skipper Kumar Sangakkara regret his decision to bowl first after winning the toss.
Chennai's openers Murali Vijay and Hussey laid a good foundation, adding 45 in 32 balls before Vijay departed for 29.
Vijay set the tone for the innings with three consecutive sixes off Ishant Sharma in his second over. However, he could not carry on and edged one to the wicketkeeper off Thisara Parera.
Raina's 52-ball-knock was laced with 11 fours and three sixes while Hussey, who took the 'Orange Cap' from RCB opener Chris Gayle during his innings of 67 off 42 balls, hit five fours and four huge sixes. Both players found the fence at will, leaving the bowlers perplexed.u00a0
However, Dale Steyn could not be taken to the cleaners. He conceded just 17 runs in four overs, showing why he is the best fast bowler in the world.
Ishant Sharma would like to forget the day in a hurry as his 0/66 in four overs was the worst figures by a bowler in the history of IPL eclipsing the joint record held by Ashoke Dinda and Varun Aaron (0/63 in 4 overs).
