Position shows India's rise in long distance running in recent times


The Indian marathon team topped the South and South-East Asia region standings for the third year in a row and ended up overall third in the fifth edition of the Greatest Race on Earth challenge which concluded with the Hong Kong marathon. It took five long years for the Indian Marathon team to move from fifth place to third place in the overall tally, according to a release. Yesterday, India's 25-year-old Armyman Angad Kumar Prasad finished men's full marathon on seventh spot in the final leg of Standard Chartered Greatest Race on Earth challenge (12th overall) at the Hong Kong Marathon with a timing of 2:25:21 sec. Angad's effort kept India on top in the South Asia and West Asia challenge for the fifth year in row in the GROE series. Indian men's team won USD 80,000 for securing the South Asia Champion Team title. In the women's section, Leelamma Alphanso finished on 10th place (22nd overall) in women's marathon with a timing of 3 hours 19.23sec. Indian women team finished fifth in the regional challenge.
