MCC's world cricket committee recommendedu00a0 global tournament as it would help attract more spectators to the stadiums for Test matches. "Test cricketers want to be able to say they're the world champions," former Australia captain Steve Waugh said, adding: "Most players still believe it is the pinnacle of the game and why not reward that every couple of years with a Test cricket championship or a trophy you've won? We can say this in the Twenty20 and 50-over versions of the game but Test cricket just goes on and on. There is a ranking system but there's no actual trophy which you can hold it aloft."

The 19-man cricket committee includes some of the best former cricketers, including Waugh, former India captains Rahul Dravid and Anil Kumble, along with ex-England captains Alec Stewart, Mike Atherton and Mike Brearley.

The committeeu00a0 was, however, more concerned with the findings of an MCC survey which revealed that players rate a lucrative IPL contract above any other achievement.
