Following David Beckham's hint that he is open to a return to the Premier League, Manchester City backed by their Abu Dhabi owners, are set to assume pole position in the race for his signature, reported Goal.com.
The interest in the former England captain is not just about his quality on the pitch, but also in an attempt to expand City's brand and announce the club on the world stage ahead of their push for European football and silverware next season.
A number of Serie A and Premier League clubs have reportedly already made contact with Beckham's agent. And though City remain front-runners to sign him, Carlo Ancelotti, who coached Beckham at Milan and is now in charge of Chelsea, may also lure him.
David Pullen, brand and marketing director at Manchester City said: "I cannot comment on specific players but (manager) Mark Hughes has secured some great transfers, and is continuing his work with the owners to secure more exciting signings. The owners are working hard to increase our world-wide fan base by bringing in some world class players."
