Mumbai's attacking batsman Shreyas Iyer, 22, earned his maiden ODI call-up yesterday when he was picked to replace Virat Kohli for India's ODI series against Sri Lanka, beginning December 10 in Dharamsala. Mumbai Ranji Trophy team coach Sameer Dighe and skipper Aditya Tare hailed the one-dayâu00c2u0080u00c2u0088selection of their batting mainstay. "Shreyas is a key player in the Indian Premier League and is capable of getting runs everywhere. He looks very mature now too. His mental strength will help handle the high pressure of international cricket," Dighe told mid-day yesterday.

The former India stumper said that Iyer, who represented India in three T20I games against New Zealand earlier this month, thoroughly deserved the ODI call-up given his consistency. "I'm very pleased for Shreyas. He is getting the opportunity to play for the country because he has scored runs consistently. He is a brilliant fielder and good timer of the ball - a fabulous all-round cricketer. It's a big opportunity and he is more than capable of handling it well," added Dighe. Iyer scored 57 and 138 against Tamil Nadu last month and 89 against Andhra two weeks ago in the Ranji Trophy. Mumbai will miss his services in the quarter-final clash starting December 7, but skipper Aditya Tare is happy for his star batsman. "I am very happy for Shreyas because he's getting into the Indian team. He deserves it," Tare said.
