New Zealand Cricket chief executive Justin Vaughan wants outgoing Black Caps skipper Daniel Vettori to play in the 2015 World Cup.

New Zealand Cricket chief executive Justin Vaughan wants outgoing Black Caps skipper Daniel Vettori to play in the 2015 World Cup.

Vaughan is convinced Vettori can figure in the tournament to be hosted by New Zealand and Australia if he is looked after in the meantime.

Vettori, who turns 36 on the eve of the 2015 World Cup, announced last week he was retiring from Twenty20 internationals. Stuff.co.nz reports.

He further said that he was "99.9 per cent sure" he would also step down as test captain. However, Vettori bided time on his one-day plans.

"I'd like to think he has a long-term goal of being there in 2015 as a player, and if we need to manage his way towards that goal we will," Vaughan said.

"It may be a long shot but it would be great to give him the farewell that [Sachin] Tendulkar got the other night. Dan will only just be 36 so if we manage his workload over the next two years it might be a possibility," he added.

Vettori has remained in India to prepare for the Indian Premier League (IPL) Twenty20 tournament, but upon his return Vaughan will put a plan to him that maximises his ability and times his run to the finish line.

Vaughan appears to have given up on the idea of persuading Vettori to remain as test captain.

"I'll chat to him about that, but it might be the right time to make a clean break and leave Dan to be a senior player and not worry about all the other responsibilities," he said. (
