Yesterday, he was at Bollywood king Shah Rukh Khan's residence to be interviewed for a coaching position at Kolkata Knight Riders.

Patil, who coached several teams since he stopped playing first-class cricket in 1992, said: "It was a very friendly conversation... no pressure at all. I was asked what according to me went wrong with KKR and what can be done to revive their fortunes."

Patil was interviewed by KKR owners Shah Rukh and Jay Mehta. Sourav Ganguly was around too.

It is learnt that KKR bosses want to hire an Indian as assistant coach. Patil had no problems with that. "I am a retired cricketer who wants to give back in any way I can. I don't have any ego problems in being an assistant coach. I told them that I was very happy to be considered," he said.

John Wright, Wasim Akram, Praveen Amre were interviewed too. A coaching position is vacant due to the departure of former Australia coach John Buchanan, whose two-year stint with the team was highly forgettable. KKR failed to reach the Indian Premier League semi-final in 2008 and 2009.
