Robinho, the Manchester City star who featured in their 2-1 win over Newcastle United yesterday after being arrested, questioned and bailed by police for allegations of raping a teenager in a Leeds nightclub earlier this week, has been staunchly criticised by none other than Pelu00e9, the godfather of modern Brazilian football.
Having completed a mega-money summer move to Manchester City from Real Madrid, Robinho, 25, is flying the Brazilian flag in England. But the last week'sdevelopments have upset his former mentor.
"It's bad news because, as Brazilians, we fight to create a good image abroad," the legendary Pelu00e9 was quoted as saying from Rio de Janeiro by goal.com.
Brazil's loss
"What happened with Robinho as well as other players like Adriano and Ronaldo has ruined the image of Brazilian soccer players around the world.
"It has closed doors."
Before the rape case controversy, Robinho marched out of City's winter training camp to return to Brazil, which attracted negative publicity.
