Ssr Lanka and West Indies are keen on using the controversial Umpire Decision Review System (UDRS) during their bilateral one-day series that gets underway on December 9. It is seen as a way for players to acclimatise to the system in the limited-overs format prior to the 2011 World Cup - where UDRS was to make its ODI debut.
A Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) official confirmed the development to MiD DAY. The International Cricket Council's (ICC) Chief Executives' Committee (CEC) met in Dubai yesterday and discussed the possibility of implementing UDRS in few ODIs before the World Cup.
While West Indies and Sri Lanka expressed their desire to use UDRS, India continued to object: "Spending $ 57,000 to implement UDRS is absurd. We are still opposed to it. West Indies and Sri Lanka are keen on using it in their series, but our stance is clear. It takes two hands to clap. "Even if South Africa are keen on using it in the ODIs against us (in Jan), we are still against it," a senior BCCI official told MiD DAY.
Confusion
However, India would have no option but to accept the system at the World Cup. "It is an ICC event, so we can't take a call. There is confusion on that front, hot-spot technology requires two infrared cameras, not all venues have the required facilities. Sometimes we feel ICC is promoting UDRS because of vested interests. "If UDRS can guarantee that there won't be any bad decisions, why have limitations in referrals?, said the Indian official.
