Sehwag takes a dig at Dhoni, says India didn't win World Cup on captaincy alone

All doesn't seem to be well in the Indian dressing room with the ongoing feud between Virender Sehwag and Team India skipper MS Dhoni having resurfaced. After having clashed over the rotation policy in the ODI series in Australia, Sehwag has taken, what seems to all intent, a fresh dig at Dhoni.

Asked to comment on Dhoni's captaincy, the opener, who has returned to the national team for the Sri Lanka tour, took a swipe at his skipper.

Responding to a question on what he felt about Dhoni's captaincy that had enabled him to lead the side to two World Cup victories -- 2007 Twenty20 and 50-over in 2011 - the Delhi batsman said, "I don't know what others feel but by the time, Dhoni took over, we already had a very strong team. So his captaincy alone didn't win World Cup for India. We had a very strong team already so we won the World Cups - T20 and World Cup. If you have a good team, you win. It's simple."

"Australia had a good team and they won three World Cups as well and it was not because of their captaincy. They had great players. And so I'll say that the Indian team backed by Dhoni's captaincy won the World Cup," he added.

This is the second time this week that Dhoni's leadership qualities have been questioned. A couple of days back, Rahul Dravid too had suggested that Sourav Ganguly's contribution as a captain was greater than Dhoni's. The recently retired cricketer had implied that the Indian team was already a mature unit when Dhoni took over the reins.

"Dhoni has been very good but his responsibilities were different from that of Sourav (Ganguly), he was taking over a team that was mature and almost everyone knew what their job was," said Dravid.

Sehwag was an able lieutenant to Dhoni for a while before his Delhi teammate Gautam Gambhir replaced him. Sehwag's comments, coming as they do a couple of weeks ahead of the Sri Lanka tour, could have dire repercussions since this rift could rip the team into factions and affect the Indian team's performance.
