Durban: South Africa defeated West Indies by 61 runs via the Duckworth-Lewis method in the first ODI here on Friday. Hashim Amla (66) and AB de Villiers (81) got the Proteas back on track after the loss of two early wickets.

The hosts posted 279 for eight before rain brought their innings to a premature end after 48.2 overs.

Chasing a revised target of 229 from 33 overs, Chris Gayle gave the Windies a blistering start with a quickfire 41, but once he departed, the wickets came in bunches for South Africa.
