Sunil Gavaskar has enjoyed a plethora of honours during his playing days. But did you know that he has been conferred doctorates from three Universities in India? Tomorrow, he will receive his fourthu00a0Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa) from the Padmashree DY Patil University, Navi Mumbai.
"It's a big honour to be conferred a doctorate from a recognised university," Gavaskar told MiD DAY from Colombo where he is on television commentary duty. Universities in Chennai, Indore and Visakhapatnam have done him similar honours. Dr Sunil Gavaskar he could well be called. "My aunt was a doctor and I too wanted to be one. But once I realised that I had no brains for it, I gave up on that ambition early," said Gavaskar.
Vijay Patil, president of the Padmashree D Y Patil University said it was an honour for the university to honour a man of the stature of Gavaskar.
"He has been a great role model and even Sir Don Bradman called him an ornament to the game," Patil said.
Gavaskar will be honoured at the University tomorrow. It's going to be a big day for 750 graduates too.
